In Honor of our Dear Friend and Teacher, Richard Gentner

On the morning of October 15, we were saddened to hear that our beloved instructor Richard Gentner passed away on October 14.

We were devastated to lose our longest-tenured instructor who was with us from our beginning in 2007. Richard taught hundreds of students at sister schools Yulupa and Strawberry. When students graduated from Yulupa they attended Strawberry. He had countless students from K-6 grade. When news broke at the schools we received many calls and emails from parents as well as condolence cards that we will forward to the family.

Richard’s legacy of providing a positive impact on the lives of his students in the chess world will live on in their hearts and minds.

Rest in Peace my friend.

From Haley Joerger’s Mom:

“Haley raced in Ukiah for Cross Country and drew Richard on her hand for motivation and inspiration :-).”

Haley was a long term student and has helped at the Santa Rosa tournament.

I just read this about Richard who passed about a year from David. I am sure they are playing chess somewhere. I learned a lot from Richard. He was extremely kind, patient and helpful as well as very supportive iny time of initial grief. Despite his own health issues . He and David were simultaneously trying to prep me to be a chess instructor.
My thoughts and condolences are with you.
